Indefinite
Brianna LaPlante
Sept 5th – Nov 7th, 2025
Indefinite is a reflection on time, memory, and transformation. My work exists at the intersection of past, present, and future—honouring where I come from while considering the generations ahead. Art is healing; the act of creating and sharing allows me to process the complexities of what it means to move from surviving to thriving.
At its core, this exhibition is about education—what we are taught, what we internalize, and what we must eventually unlearn. It holds space for the tension between learning and indoctrination, asking how knowledge is passed down, who decides what is worth remembering, and what is to be recovered. Nothing worth losing is ever lost with my spirituality.
My practice is deeply intuitive and guided by spiritual technologies—such as the moon’s relationship to water, fire’s role in transformation, and the tipi/home fire as a symbol of Indigenous knowledge systems. These elements hold teachings that my spirit and blood memory recall, while my mind navigates colonial education.
Through materials that have lived previous lives—charcoal, paper, smudge, ash, wood, bison—I explore cycles of learning, unlearning and becoming. Circular canvases reflect time as non-linear and relational, challenging Western concepts of beginning and end.
Each artwork is a study of self, of memory, of systems of knowledge, and of the universe. I draw from both academic and ceremonial teachings, allowing my mind, body, and spirit to move together in the act of creation. My installations and two-dimensional works exist in dialogue, inviting viewers into a space of reflection, intuition, and movement.
Indefinite is not only the name of this exhibition—it’s a commitment to lifelong learning. It marks a moment of transition in my practice, grounded in ancestral memory and shaped by the future I hope to help create for my communities.
